Winter Storm-Related Travel Insurance Coverage from Travel Insured

Snow, ice and sleet storms often delay and sometimes prevent pre-planned winter travel.

Here is how Travel Insured coverage provides relief when trips are disrupted.

Trip Cancellation:

All of Travel Insured’s 4 types of Worldwide Trip Protector plans provide coverage up to the full trip cost when a winter storm causes complete cessation of the insured’s common carrier for at least 24 hours. The same coverage could apply if a natural disaster, such as a blizzard or flood, resulted in either the insured’s destination accommodations or their own home being rendered uninhabitable.

Trip Interruption:

Travel Insured’s Worldwide Trip Protector plans, depending upon the specific plan selected, provide up to 100%, or up to 150%, of the non-refundable prepaid trip cost in maximum coverage. Coverage could apply in all 4 types of Worldwide Trip Protector plans if a natural disaster, such as a blizzard or flood, resulted in either the insured’s destination accommodations or their own home being rendered uninhabitable. In addition, the ordering by local authorities of a mandatory evacuation of destination accommodations due to a natural disaster, such as a blizzard or flood, could be a covered reason for Trip Interruption under the comprehensive World Wide Trip Protector and Trip Protector Gold plans.

Cancel for Any Reason:

This option is only available in either a Worldwide Trip Protector Gold plan, to be purchased within 30 days of initial trip deposit, or in a Worldwide Trip Protector plan, to be purchased within 14 days of trip deposit. The coverage enables the insured to cancel for any reason, including fear of traveling in a winter storm that has not yet arrived, up to 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure date. The coverage can reimburse up to 75% of the non-refundable trip cost. This option, however, is not available in Worldwide Trip Protector Lite or Lite Expanded plans

Trip Delay:

Travel Insured International reimburses insured travelers for covered expenses when their trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for 6 or more hours on a Worldwide Trip Protector Gold or Worldwide Trip Protector plan, or for 12 or more hours on a Worldwide Trip Protector Lite or Lite Expanded plan. Covered hazards may include: a common carrier delay, including for disruptive winter weather; an accident en route to a scheduled departure in which the insured or a travel companion is directly or not directly involved; any delay due to lost or stolen passports, money or travel documents, or an unannounced strike, natural disaster, quarantine or hijacking.

The coverage can reimburse unused, non-refundable land or sea arrangements, a one-way economy airfare for the insured to catch up to their trip or to return to their original return destination and, depending upon the plan, up to $100 or $200 per day in accommodation and meal expenses.

Missed Port of Call / Change of Itinerary:

Travel Insured can reimburse up to a maximum of $200, $500 or $700 depending on the specific plan selected, for the cost of any prepaid, non-refundable activity, included on the pre-planned itinerary, in which the insured is prevented from participating due to an unscheduled change of itinerary. This can be due to a winter weather-related delay, but the change must be verified by the insured’s cruise line or tour operator. This coverage, however, is not included in the Worldwide Trip Protector Lite plan.

Missed Connection:

Travel Insured provides Missed Connection coverage when a common carrier delay, including for inclement winter weather, causes the insured to miss his or her cruise or tour departure. There must be a cancellation or delay of scheduled flights for three (3) or more hours with a Worldwide Trip Protector or Trip Protector Gold plan, or six (6) or more hours with a Worldwide Trip Protector Lite Expanded plan. The coverage, excluded in the Trip Protector Lite plan, provides for up to $200, 500 or $700 in maximum benefits, depending on the specific plan selected. It can reimburse transportation expenses to join the trip, as well as the unused, non-refundable portion of the trip, and reasonable accommodation or meal expenses. Coverage is secondary to any reimbursement by the cruise or tour supplier, and is not provided if the insured cancels due to inclement weather, but was not prevented from reaching their scheduled departure.

Baggage Loss or Delay:

Airline bags tend to be delayed longer or even be lost when winter storms disrupt the air transportation system. Here is baggage coverage provided by each Travel Insured plan:

  • Worldwide Trip Protector Gold: $2,500 Baggage & Personal Effects coverage, and up to $500 in Baggage Delay when bags are delayed by common carrier for 12 or more hours.
  • Worldwide Trip Protector: $1,000 Baggage & Personal Effects coverage, and up to $300 in Baggage Delay when bags are delayed by common carrier for 12 or more hours.
  • Worldwide Trip Protector Lite and Worldwide Trip Protector Lite Expanded: $750 Baggage & Personal Effects coverage with a $50 deductible, and up to $200 in Baggage Delay when bags are delayed by common carrier for 24 or more hours.
