Iceland, the land of fire and ice, has some of the world’s most unique and captivating landscapes. What may have been considered a layover on the way to points of interest in Europe has become a hotspot destination for tourists over the years. For the adventure seeker in you, here are some recommendations for areas to visit while adventuring in Iceland.

Glaciers

Iceland is a glacier paradise with 11% of its total land area covered by ice. Glaciers can be easy to access and there are many hiking tours to choose from. You can hike on top of a glacier itself or take an amazing ice cave tour inside of one! The atmosphere inside an ice cave is surreal with walls of cyan blue that sparkle like diamonds! Glaciers are short-lived wonders that collapse every summer while new caves form every winter. In the age of global warming, you might want to take advantage of this natural wonder while you still can. Consider adding it on your bucket list!

Waterfalls

Iceland boasts of an amazing number of waterfalls that are breathtaking cascades and can be easily accessible. One of the best-known waterfalls in Iceland is Seljalandsfoss, located near the capital city of Reykjavík. It is a 200 ft drop that is picturesque. A path leads you behind the waterfall where visitors can take fantastic shots. So, consider bringing your raincoat. Another waterfall close by is Skógafoss, where you can hike the 527 steps to the observation platform at the top. Keep a look out for the rainbows that naturally occur around these waterfalls too!

Geothermal Pools

The country has countless geothermal pools where you can take a pleasant dip in an incredible location. The most well-known geo pool is the Blue Lagoon, considered one of the 25 Wonders of the World. It is a warm, milky-white lake located in the middle of a rugged lava field. The water is a mixture of freshwater and seawater, rich with silica and minerals. Geothermal bathing is a huge thing in Iceland and is part of the locals’ daily life. There are hundreds to choose from all over the country.

Diamond Beach

You may have seen plenty of white sandy beaches in-person or in pictures but imagine traversing a striking beach of black sand in Iceland! Diamond Beach is one of the most visited attractions of the country for good reason. There you can view glistening ice chunks on the beach that are a favorite for tourists. The ice chunks come from nearby glaciers and travel to the beach via an enormous lagoon. You can even take a boat tour on the lagoon and sail among the massive icebergs!
