Are you planning a vacation where you’ll be spending days relaxing on soft sand beaches and bright blue water? Whether you’re relaxing on the white sand beaches in the Bahamas or on the dark volcanic sand of Costa Rica, it’s important to learn how to keep your valuables safe at the beach. Your belongings may become victim of petty theft or even become damaged from water and sand. The beach is supposed to be a relaxing time to enjoy the sunshine and refreshing water. Keep in mind these tips when planning your next beach vacation, so you can enjoy the beach and most importantly, be protected.

Tip #1: Invest in a Waterproof Dry Bag

A dry bag is ideal for beachgoers that want to bring lots of possessions. It keeps your belongings safe from water or sand damage. You can even secure the dry bag to your back or waist, seal it airtight, and take your belongings in the water with you. If you plan on leaving most of your valuables at home, an alternative is to invest in a waterproof smartphone pouch that’s equipped with touch sensitivity and a lanyard to secure around your neck. Whether you’re a solo traveler or traveling with a group, leaving your possessions while you take a dip in the water can be worrisome. A dry bag allows you to take your things with you in the water and protect them from water damage.

Tip #2: Sit Close to People or a Lifeguard Stand

One of the first thing you do when you arrive at a beach is decide where you or your group is going to set up camp. There are a few factors to consider such as the tide that could wash your belongings away or whether you want to be near people or have your own secluded space. When it comes to protecting your personal items, sitting close to a crowd of people or near a lifeguard stand is the best option. These areas are usually avoided by petty thieves because they are monitored and easily visible by a lifeguard toward or beach patrol. Although lifeguards are not there to watch your valuables, setting up camp near one can help minimize the chance of becoming a victim of beach theft.

Tip #3: Leave Your Valuables at Home

Ultimately, the best way to protect your belongings at the beach is by simply leaving any valuables at home. Of course, you must bring the beach essentials, but steer towards choosing to bring inexpensive items or devices that can be easily replaced. For example, if you’re dying to lay out of the beach and read your favorite book, then opt for a physical copy rather than an e-reader that can get stolen or damaged. Bringing some money may be necessary, but not your whole wallet. You can invest in a waterproof key holder or pouch that can hold the small necessities like keys or money. It would also be a good idea to remove all or most of your jewelry and leave those items at home. It can be very easy to lose your rings, earrings, or necklaces in the endless grains of sand or the crash of an ocean wave.

Tip #3: Invest in a Waterproof Camera

When you’re on a beach vacation, you’re going to want to take in the fun and beauty through picture and videos. The best way to capture the moment is either on your smartphone or by investing in a waterproof camera. Nowadays, smartphones take excellent photos. A DSLR or larger camera is not necessary to take on your beach day. Their lenses are fragile and are easily susceptible to damage from sand or water. They are also easy targets by thieves due to their large size. Instead, try opting for a waterproof camera such as a disposable waterproof camera or a GoPro. GoPro cameras are waterproof and have the option to include a wrist or body strap that can easily be attached to you for safekeeping.

Tip #4: Know that Nothing is 100% Safe

It’s important to understand that none of these options are 100% safe. These tips help you reduce the risk of losing or damaging any valuable items but know the risk will always be there. We hope these tips help you to protect your belongings at the beach and allow you to relax feeling protected. To give yourself even more protection, try considering travel protection for your next beach trip. If your valuable items are stolen, we can help you get them refunded.
