When deciding whether to purchase travel protection, it’s a good idea to review the plan you intend to purchase, so you can have a better understanding of what coverage and benefits the plan includes. By following a few simple steps, you can navigate through the document and determine whether the plan has the right coverage for you and your trip.

Navigating the Plan Document

Take a moment to skim through the table of contents. This will give you an idea of the topics covered in the document and help you navigate to specific sections that you may need to reference. Here are a few key sections of the travel protection plan:

  • Worldwide Non-Insurance Assistance Services: On the second page of every Travel Insured plan document, we give a summary of the travel assistance services available and contact information to reach our 24/7 Non-insurance Assistance Services. From translation services, concierge services, to hospital admission guarantee, our non-insurance assistance services can help you during travel. In the event, you need assistance while traveling, call 1‑800‑494‑9907 (Toll-Free US/Canada) or 1‑603‑328‑1707 (Collect Outside US/Canada).
  • Schedule of Benefits: After the first few pages, we provide a schedule of benefits which provide a summary of each travel insurance benefit included in your plan and the maximum benefit amount. For a more detailed explanation of your plan’s benefits, you’ll navigate to the corresponding sections: Travel Arrangement Protection, Protection for Your Belongings, Travel Insurance Benefits, Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefits.
  • General Definitions: This section is your glossary of travel insurance definitions. What is a pre-existing medical condition? Who is considered a family member? All the answers to these questions and more can be found here.
  • Exclusions and Limitations: This section includes situations and circumstances that are not covered by your travel protection plan. Exclusions may apply to specific benefits but note that there is a general list of exclusions that apply to all insurance benefits provided by the plan. A couple of key general exclusions include any loss or expense caused due to, arising or resulting from piloting or learning to pilot or acting as a member of the crew of any aircraft or being under the influence of drugs or narcotics, unless administered upon the advice of a physician as prescribed. Information about the terms and conditions that must be met for the pre-existing medical condition exclusion to be waived can also be found in this section of the plan document.
  • Claims Procedures and How to File a Claim: If an unexpected loss or event occurred during your trip that can be covered and reimbursed by your travel protection plan, you’ll need to review your duties in the Claims Procedures section of your plan document. Depending on the benefit your loss falls under, you may need to call your Travel Supplier immediately to report any cancellations or report baggage losses to local authorities as soon as possible to receive their written report of your loss. These claims procedures are essential to have when filing a claim. Every Travel Insured plan document includes a How to File a Claim section, so you know what documents are needed to start your claim. An easy way to file and manage your claim is online at https://www.travelinsured.com/claims/.

Taking Notes

As you read through the plan document, consider taking note of any terms or phrases that you may not be familiar with. In these cases, it may be helpful to refer to the glossary of general definitions made available towards the end of the plan document or call our Customer Care team at 1-800-243-3174. It's important to read the entire document, even if some sections may not seem relevant to your trip. This will ensure that you have a complete understanding of each benefit, the covered reasons and any exclusions or limitations. As you read, consider keeping a notepad or document open to take notes on important information. Important information can include benefit limits, contact information to our 24/7 Travel Assistance non-insurance services, and any specific instructions for filing a claim.

By taking the time to read and understand your travel protection plan document before purchasing it, you can help ensure that you have a complete understanding of your coverage and be prepared for any unexpected situations that may arise during your travels. If you come across a section of your plan document that is particularly confusing, reach out to our Customer Care Team at 1-800-243-3174 or visit our website for more information. We are here to help you find the right plan for you and your travels and keep you well-informed about the product you purchased.
