Planning for travel can take a lot of time, money, and effort. So, when it’s finally time for you to take that much deserved trip, taking extra steps to boost your health and wellness can help you make the most of your time away. There are many things that we can do before, during, and even after travel to help us feel our best. Below we’ll give you a few suggestions but remember to listen to your health care providers and your body to make the best decision on which tips you might want to adopt each time you travel.

Staying active

Although there are times when we want to go on vacation to lay on the beach for a week, it can be very important to stay active during travel. This might mean stretching your legs on a long-haul flight, taking an extra stop during a road trip, walking to and from activities or dinning (when possible) and much more. Staying active doesn’t have to mean giving up that much desired R&R.

Drinking Plenty of Water

Drinking water while we’re traveling can fall by the wayside. Often times though, many of the activities that we’re doing while traveling can be very dehydrating. Consider bringing a reusable water bottle that you can fill any time you pass a water fountain or restaurant. If you’re traveling by plane, leave the water bottle empty until you pass through security. Carrying the water bottle with you might help you remember to sip periodically throughout the day.

Washing Your Hands

This one might seem like an obvious tip, but it can be easily forgotten in the mix of excitement. Along with the normal everyday germs you come into contact by touching things, new places can also be home to different environmental factors. Pollen is an example of this. Environmental “normalcies” in your area of the country, or world, may not be the same where you’re traveling. Although you may not be able to avoid certain things, washing your hands can be a good way to keep anything extra from entering your body.

Planning Ahead

Sometimes traveling can be stressful. To avoid added stress, try planning most if not all of your itinerary before you set out. Planning ahead can reduce the need to make on-the-spot decisions that could cause stress or friction between you and your travel partners. Don’t be intimidated by a fully planned itinerary though, you can pencil in “free time” – you might want some time away from your travel buddies, time to lounge around your room and watch a movie, or if you want some spontaneity while you're gone you have dedicated times to “flip a coin” and decide what to do next.

Journaling

Journaling can be a really great tool when traveling for a number of different reasons. Journaling is one way for you to express yourself in a private space. If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed by traveling, try journaling to release some of those negative emotions you might be having. Journaling can also be a great way to preserve your memories. When we travel, we take in so much new information that it can be hard to remember little details when you get back home. Journaling at the end of your day or first thing in the morning, jotting down all that happened that day, or the day before, can help you remember the small things.

Getting out of Your Comfort Zone

This one might seem a little out of place. Getting out of your comfort zone, though, can be a great way to spark joy and inspiration if you’ve been feeling rundown by your day-to-day life. Feeling like you’re in a rut can come from a lack of diversity in your daily life, amongst other things. So, doing something that you normally wouldn’t do might be a quick way to remedy that problem. Try finding the right balance between doing something unusual for yourself but not something so outlandish that you will be more stressed than beforehand.

Traveling Protected

Traveling protected with a Travel Protection plan can provide added peace of mind when you leave home. Having both insurance and non-insurance assistance services there for you in case something goes wrong, might help to relieve some of the worries you have about leaving home. Travel protection plans from Travel Insured can be customized to fit the type of travel you plan on doing. If you’re unsure about what travel protection is and the benefits that are offered, visit our website today, or talk to your travel advisor to learn more. We hope you have a wonderful trip, and that some of these tips reinforce your wellness while traveling.
